It was a rainy November morning in Manchester when Janet M. (54) sat crying on her kitchen floor, lead still in her hand. Her Labrador Buddy lay beside her and looked up at her with big brown eyes – as if he could sense something was wrong.

"I just couldn't take it any more," Janet recalls today. "Buddy pulled so hard on the lead that I stumbled and fell. A woman passing by asked whether I was really capable of handling such a large dog. In that moment I thought: maybe she's right."

When walks become a nightmare

Janet had got Buddy as a puppy. Back then everything was easy. But the bigger he grew, the harder he pulled. What started as a small problem quickly became a nightmare.

"I really tried everything," she says. "4 different harnesses, between £20 and £50 each. 3 dog training courses – I spent over £600 on those. Then those specialist head collars everyone talks about. Nothing worked long-term."

But the worst part wasn't the failed attempts or the money spent. It was the guilt.

"Every time Buddy choked himself running into his collar, I felt like a terrible dog owner. I'd see the looks from other dog owners in the park. Hear the comments from passers-by. And Buddy could feel my tension. Our walks had stopped being enjoyable – for either of us."

A chance encounter that changed everything
